Buck's goal seals three straight home wins

No. 13 Washington beat Penn State 1-0 on October 11 at Husky Soccer Stadium beside Lake Washington, completing a perfect three-match home stretch in Big Ten play. Alex Buck scored the only goal.

Buck, a third-year forward from Medina, fired a shot into the bottom left corner in the 56th minute, assisted by fifth-year midfielder Lucy Newlin. The goal was reviewed and the call stood after what Penn State's recap called "an extensive look." It was Buck's fourth goal of the 2026 season and Newlin's first assist. Straight after the call stood, Buck took off, beat multiple Penn State defenders, and fired another shot that soared just over the net.

Nine shutouts and a defense built on depth

The win gave Washington nine team clean sheets on the season.

Goalkeeper Tanner Ijams, in her third year, recorded her eighth personal shutout of 2026, ranking second in the nation and first in the Big Ten.

After the USC win earlier in the month, Ijams told The Daily: "The reason we can keep so many clean sheets is because of the fact that we defend as a team and attack as a team. Our back line is one of the best in the country, but apart from that, it's the whole field in front of us that gives us such an advantage." Defender Maya Loudd was central to holding Penn State despite the Nittany Lions finishing with a 9-1 edge in corner kicks, including four straight in the 84th minute that Washington turned away.

Buck on the national stage

Buck scored in the 31st minute of the Iowa win on October 8, then added the Penn State winner three days later, drawing level with Jadyn Holdenried at four goals each to co-lead UW's scoring.

Earlier in the fall, she scored twice for the U.S. Under-20 national team at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland, both against New Zealand in a 9-0 group-stage win. Penn State's own match notes flagged her coming in: "Alex Buck, a USA U-20 World Cup teammate of Nittany Lions Emma Johnson and Kealey Titmuss, is second on the team with three goals."

Where the Huskies stand

Washington improved to 11-1-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the Big Ten.

The only loss came at No. 2 Michigan State, 3-0. Washington holds a 5-1-0 all-time record against Penn State. The Huskies are also the defending Big Ten Tournament champions.

No. 14 Washington travels to No. 11 UCLA at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday, October 16, at 8 PM PT on Big Ten Network.
