Ten years of mats in taprooms

Just Add Yoga started putting yoga classes in Seattle-area breweries ten years ago, and this fall it has no brewery date on its calendar.

The series began with two instructors, Jess Fleming and Dawn Hood, who met in teacher training, sketched the idea in the summer of 2015, and ran a beta class late that year at Traveler in Montlake before launching publicly in early 2016.

"Why not combine the social atmosphere of beer with yoga," Hood told Seattle Refined that May. Fleming gave Seattle Yoga News a local reason in July 2016: the series exists "to combat the 'Seattle freeze!'"

The format

The brewery class has kept one shape.

Across the organizer's 2024 and 2025 listings, most event pages describe "an hour long, all levels, Yoga practice," after which the group moves "to the bar for a pint." Over time the idea spread past beer.

The schedule archive includes gin at Scratch Distillery in Edmonds, whiskey at Copperworks and wine at Alluvium Cellars. In 2016 the press quoted the pitch as "Introducing people to yoga one beer at a time"; the homepage tagline now says one drink at a time.

Where it has run

The archive reads as a map of the region's taprooms.

Stoup Brewing hosted at its Kenmore loft through 2024 and at its Capitol Hill taproom at 1158 Broadway from September 2024 to October 2025. Urban Family Brewing, at 1103 NW 52nd Street in Ballard, hosted in 2024 and again through 2025.

Postdoc Brewing in Kenmore hosted repeatedly from late 2024 through 2025. Future Primitive's Beach Bar on Alki hosted in August 2024, with further Future Primitive dates into March 2025. Crucible Brewing in Everett joined in 2025.

One brewery in 2026

This year the brewery side narrowed to a single venue.

Just Add Yoga ran a summer series at Urban Family on five Sundays, August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, co-hosted with the Lynnwood studio Yoga Sanctuary. The rest of its 2026 calendar was outdoors: a series at Log Boom Park in Kenmore and another at Haines Wharf Park in Edmonds, whose last listed class was August 30.

No Seattle brewery date is posted now. The organizer's schedule shows nothing beyond those summer series, its Eventbrite page shows no upcoming events, and Urban Family's own calendar, which runs into early October, has no yoga on it.

What is on the books

The dated listings on Just Add Yoga's homepage are retreats, and its 2026 listings also included one at Suncadia Resort in the Cascades.

A La Paz, Mexico trip from February 25 to March 1, 2027 is sold out with a waitlist. Sun Mountain Lodge in the Methow Valley, tentatively spring 2027, and Costa Brava, Spain, tentatively late 2027, are interest lists for now.

For a Seattle reader who wants the original format, the organizer's schedule page and its Eventbrite listings are where the next brewery date would appear. Until one does, the series that began with one class in Montlake in 2015 is between taprooms.
