Coaching Came First

Laura Su turned years of coaching horseback riding into a career in strength.

Born and raised in Seattle and homeschooled until college, the coach earned a Bachelor's in Exercise Science in 2018.

That same year, she began working as a personal trainer, starting with group fitness classes and then moving into individualized sessions. Today she has 9 years of experience training clients and holds an NSCA certification.

Science Plus Heart

Plenty of coaches understand the science of training, and others are tuned in to the soft skills of connection.

Laura says clients choose her coaching because it weaves both together.

The goal, she says, is getting strong in a sustainable way while staying consistent through the stretches of life when making the gym a priority gets tough. Specialties include strength, mobility and injury recovery.

Strength That Travels

Clients keep landing on the same sentence: strength training changed my life.

The coach says that is what keeps her going.

The limited time she has with each client every week helps people get physically stronger, she says, and that strength carries into the rest of their lives.

A Week Without a Repeat

Right now the coaching happens at TRAIN Seattle.

On client days, the schedule is full, with 2-3 clients per hour in the mornings and again in the afternoon and evenings. In between, the coach fits in her own training, because as a competitive powerlifter she trains year round, even when no meet is on the calendar.

Running Liberate Strength means wearing every hat. Along with coaching, there is administrative work, networking, marketing and social media. The coach says it keeps her on her toes, teaches her new things on the fly and means no two workdays are the same.

Road Trips and a Big Next Step

Competition season has Laura on the road.

She often coaches at powerlifting meets and is about to head to Houston, Texas for IDFPA Worlds and then to Spokane for the USAPL Washington State Championships. After that comes Las Vegas, where she will compete in December.

The bigger project is closer to home. The coach is working toward opening her own training studio and membership-based gym in North Seattle and is in the process of finding a commercial lease. She is also growing her presence on Instagram and YouTube.

Off the Platform

Away from the barbell, the coach has two Standard Poodles named Rogue and Rain.

Her favorite comfort show is New Girl, which she has watched probably at least ten times.

Laura Su is an NSCA-certified coach with 9 years of experience. She is a competitive powerlifter who coaches athletes on the meet platform. She also runs Liberate Strength.
