A room built for one sculpture
The mats go down under a 100-foot-long Chihuly sculpture.
The Glasshouse at Chihuly Garden and Glass, 305 Harrison St. at Seattle Center, was built to house it: 40 feet tall, glass and steel, 4,500 square feet. Hundreds of hand-blown forms in red, yellow and orange hang overhead, in what the venue calls one of Chihuly's largest suspended sculptures. Alisa Galper, who teaches November 1, has written of "the acoustics beneath the suspended glass sculpture" there.
In a story published January 19, 2018, KING 5's Evening program showed people practicing beneath the glass, within sight of the Space Needle. Leah Zaccaria, who owns Hauteyoga Queen Anne and Shefayoga Roosevelt, told the station that class goers almost get to have "the whole Seattle experience in one shot." Chihuly Garden and Glass asks for extra layers, since the Glasshouse runs "cooler than most yoga studios."
Ferrah Seifert and Ruth Davis
Ferrah Seifert led October 18.
She has a psychology degree and has worked in counseling and education, including at the UW School of Medicine, and she earned her yoga teacher certificate with Alchemy of Yoga in 2013. Her Shefayoga bio says she likes designing "creative flows that build up towards more advanced postures." She has been a student at Hauteyoga Queen Anne since 2010 and now heads sales and operations for that studio and Shefayoga, where she also works the front desk and teaches.
She was on the Glasshouse schedule last fall too, for October 19. Ruth Davis, who leads October 21, completed a 200-hour teacher training in fall 2014 and spent the next four years on Yoga Sculpt, teaching her 1,000th class along the way. She has been part of the CorePower Yoga community for a decade, and she was on the Glasshouse evening schedule last December 22.
Alisa Galper
Galper is a vocalist as well as a yoga teacher.
Her site says she spent more than 25 years developing her voice, including time living and working in Taiwan as a recording artist who released Chinese pop music. Shefayoga's bio describes "a gentle & mindful vinyasa class" and a 250-hour Yoga Alliance certification she completed in July 2020, and says she generally closes class with a Tibetan singing bowl.
For a Sunday class in the Glasshouse in April, she billed her "signature" QiFlow practice, a mix of qigong and yoga, with a live sound bath at the close.
A series with three names
The venue's earliest yoga listing on record is Wake up with Yoga, three Saturdays in 2015, on January 3, February 7 and March 7, each billed as a 60-minute session with instructors from Core Power Yoga Studio.
By December 2015 the venue listed the class as Yoga Under Glass. The Sundays are now Yoga in the Glasshouse, and by March 2025 the venue had added an evening class taught by CorePower. Zaccaria was on the Sunday schedule for January 5, 2025.
Four dates this fall
Chihuly Garden and Glass has four more yoga classes on its fall calendar, all for ages 12 and up.
The Sunday class, on November 1, ran 50 minutes, with doors at 8:30 a.m. and class at 9 a.m. Shefayoga, a Roosevelt studio, teaches it as vinyasa, open to all skill levels. The Wednesday class, on November 18, is Yoga and Sound Bath in the Glasshouse: 45 minutes, beginner-friendly and taught by CorePower, with doors at 5 p.m. and class at 6 p.m. This fall, only the Wednesday class is billed with a sound bath.
No teacher is named yet for November 18. Tickets start at $42.50 per person on the ticketing site and must be bought online ahead of time. They include gallery admission, after class on Sundays and as part of the evening on Wednesdays. Mats, water and a hand towel are bring-your-own, and loaner mats are limited and go first come, first served.
