Monday morning track at Roosevelt High School
Seattle Green Lake Running Group opens its Monday morning track session to any runner.
No registration, no fee listed on the event page. Show up at 5:30 AM at Roosevelt High School Track, 12th Ave NE and NE 68th St.
Loka Murphy founded SGLRG in 2010 with nine friends at Green Lake. Sixteen years on, the Meetup group has 13,790 members. The Monday track session is one of several weekly events the group runs across the city.
How the session works
A group warmup starts at 5:30 AM, followed by a set workout and a cool-down.
Multiple pace groups train at the same time, doing different drills at different speeds. Newcomers can join any of them. Some weeks groups leave the track for hill repeats nearby or longer intervals at Green Lake; others stay on the track.
The workout changes each week, posted in the Meetup event comments a few days before. During marathon training seasons, typically spring and late summer, some participants run longer repeats on Green Lake's inner-loop path instead.
Who shows up
Meetup RSVPs run low: the official count reflects only a fraction of the people who actually turn up, a gap the group's own blog has noted for years. As of October 2026, the session is hosted by Dave and two other organizers.
Member Kathy joined after a running friend got injured and ended up running six days a week with the group. "They treated me as a runner and not a widow," she told the Seattle Times in 2021. Member Carol: "Camaraderie kept me coming back. Long runs are when you want someone to talk to, someone to keep yourself and others entertained."
The community around it
The Monday session sits inside a group that fields teams at local races, including the Seattle Cherry Blossom Run at Seward Park in April 2026 and the Run and Walk with Pride in June 2026. Founder Murphy on what has kept it going: "the constant has been folks showing up week in and week out, rain or shine."
Member Biruk moved closer to Green Lake specifically to stay near the group after finding his people through post-run hangouts. "Show up, be consistent; it may take a while to find your crew, but it will happen if you're open-minded," he told the Seattle Times in 2021. The Meetup group holds 8,613 past events and 427 upcoming ones. Its Strava club counts 5,307 members alongside the 13,790 on Meetup.
